Project Overview

TRE successfully completed a multi-site infrastructure upgrade involving the installation and modification of DC track feeder and negative return cables across key substations and trackside locations. The works were executed to improve electrical reliability and support future operational capacity in the 3rdrail area.

Key Achievements

· Total DC Track Feeder Cables Installed: Over 50 cables across 8 substations and 3 trackside locations, totalling approx. 3,000m of 1000mm² cable.

· Negative Return System Upgrade: At Paddock Wood Substation, a full renewal of the negative return system was completed with 8 × 800mm² aluminium cables (1635m).

· Conductor Rail Modifications: Ramp ends formed and conductor rail pots installed at Old Kent Road, Roffey Road and Victoria, improving safety and accessibility.

· Hookswitch Removals: Hookswitches removed at Nunhead, Old Kent Road and Paddock Wood, streamlining the electrical layout.

· Victoria: Installed 2 × 1000mm² cables (200m); removed 32m of conductor rail.

Execution Strategy

· Cable Installation: Conducted during track access shifts using a combination of manpower and winch systems to minimize disruption.

· Termination & Commissioning: Terminated all cables at substations via Track Disconnectors (TDs) where required, and conductor rails. Existing cables were safely removed and disposed of.

· Safety & Compliance: All works were completed in accordance with NSCD scope requirements and BAM’s / Network Rail’s safety protocols.
